1. How do I establish garbage service for my new home?

If your home is new construction, contact a My Hoover Connect representative at 205-739-7311. They will instruct Waste Services of Alabama to deliver a trash and recycle bin to your home. They will also inform you of the days of collection and answer any questions you may have. If you have moved into an existing home, service has already been established at your address. You only need to call if you do not know the days of service or if the bins are damaged or missing.

2. Who do I call for limb, brush, large bulky items collection?

To be added to the list for a special collection, contact My Hoover Connect at (205-739-7311) or submit online using My Hoover Connect. You may also email us at myhooverconnect@hooveralabama.gov with any request.  Crews on the garbage trucks can sometimes gather small piles of limbs but in most cases it is best to inform us. Only debris generated by the homeowner will be collected. It is the responsibility of hired landscapers, tree services, roofers, remodeling companies, etc. to remove any materials/debris generated by their crews.

3. Will the garbage company pick up paint, paint cans, motor oil, pesticides and other hazardous waste?

No. They do not pick up hazardous waste. However, the city does host two annual Household Hazardous Waste Days in April and Sept each year. During this event, Hoover residents are allowed to bring items for disposal that normally are not accepted in their regular trash. Items such as paint, oil, old gas, many types of batteries, pesticides, etc. The dates of this event will be posted on the website as soon as it is finalized each year - usually in March.

Note: If you will bring paint to a solid and the can is completely dry, it can be placed with your regular trash. It must be completely dry with the lid off. You can speed up this process by adding cat litter, sand or sawdust.

4. Why was my trash or recycle bin not emptied?

There usually are five reasons your bin was not emptied:
1. Not out on time (7:00 AM)
2. Non-recyclable items in your recycle bin
3. Trash bin too heavy to lift
4. Too far from street (no more than 5' from asphalt)
5. Hidden from sight (shrubs, car, mailbox) needs to be seen coming from either end of street

5. Who do I contact to have a broken or missing garbage or recycle bin replaced?

Submit your request through My Hoover Connect. Carts are owned by the garbage company and they are responsible for repairs and for replacing any damaged carts.  We will enter a request for new carts or replacement carts for you.   Email us at myhooverconnect@hooveralabama.gov or call us at (205) 739-7311 as well and we will assist you in entering a request.   

6. Will my live Christmas tree be picked up at the curb?

Yes. You may place it at the curb on your normal scheduled collection day.

7. How do I prepare my yard waste for collection?

Tree trimmings, branches, shrub clippings, etc., must be no longer than six (6) feet. Place items directly on the curb. Do not place near fire hydrants, utility wires or boxes, vehicles or any place a boom truck would have difficulty manuevering. Do not mix other household items in with the brush pile. If the homeowner hires a professional landscaper or tree service, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to have the company employed haul off all debris generated.

8. How do I dispose of refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and other appliances which have chlorofluorocardons (freon)?

Prior to contacting us for special collection, you will need to have the freon removed by a certified technician. The item must be tagged with a certification of removal. Once it has been tagged, you may contact a My Hoover Connect representative at (205-739-7311), submit a request through My Hoover Connect or email myhooverconnect@hooveralabama.gov with your request and we will enter it for you. 

9. Which holidays will the garbage and recycling not be collected?

The six (6) holidays in which your service could be delayed are: 

1. July 4th
2. Labor Day
3. Thanksgiving Day
4. Christmas Day
5. New Years Day
6. Memorial Day

When one of these six holidays falls on the weekend, there will be no change in your garbage and recycling services. If your service day is on the Holiday, your home will be serviced only once that week.
